Wines for Winter

Wines for Winter

With the winter arrival, it is necessary to have warmer nice meals. For that, a glass of wine will help to make your evenings cosier! A good full-bodied wine will accompany your hot meal this winter, just choose the most suitable one.

What are the best wines for winter?

When buying wines for winter, opt for the fuller and with higher alcohol content. Red wines and fortified sweets, such as those from Oporto, are the most ideal. However, you can also add some whites that are more structured and consistent.

These stronger wines combine with hot soups, as well as more tasty and fatty meals. Therefore, if the desired temperature is on the plate, it must also rise in the wine. The alcohol content is also important, as it helps to cause a sensation of heat. An extra degree or two already makes a difference. For example, a wine with 15% alcohol will give a feeling of warmth far superior to a wine with 12%.

Another important factor is the maturation in oak barrels, which help to increase the wine's flavour.

Which grape varieties or wines are more suitable?

Port: without a doubt, Port wine must be present in this list. With rich, concentrated and comforting flavours, it pairs with cheese, chocolate and nuts.

Syrah: this grape variety has flavours of wild fruits and pepper. Its wines are robust and with good alcohol content. They go well with grilled meat and game meat, on the coldest nights like the ones we have spent. Discover our bottle rack which this grape variety gives its name to.

Chardonnay: these wines stand out for their sweetness, especially vanilla and caramel. Accompanies dishes with poultry and/or mushrooms.

Cabernet Sauvignon: this grape variety is more complex, with slight acidity and aromas of tomato leaf, spices and cedar wood. It harmonizes with mashed potatoes and poultry meat.
